Description:

Dan Scungio is a laboratory safety officer, educator, speaker and consultant with over 20 years of experience in the healthcare sector. His vast experience in medical technology has seen him take on roles as laboratory safety officer and manager at various medical institutes; most recently the Sentara Healthcare, where he has worked for over 15 years. Dan graduated the State University of New York – School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Medical Technology. In the years that followed, he worked as a medical technologist and lab generalist in various healthcare facilities such as the Williamsburg Community Hospital in 2004, before becoming a laboratory manager.


Dan’s versatility in laboratory operations has earned him a stellar career in medical technology. Currently working as the laboratory safety officer at Sentara Lab Services, Dan also works in the capacity of a lab safety consultant under his own firm called ‘Dan the Lab Safety Man’. His contribution to the field of medical technology is invaluable. In addition to developing content for numerous Chemical Management DVDs, Dan has assisted with the development of a laboratory accreditation checklist for the World Health Association’s African regional office (AFRO). He is a member of countless notable associations like the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).


As an experienced lab safety consultant and safety officer, Dan has shared his valuable knowledge with different labs of all sizes through on-site education and safety trainings. Also an international speaker, Dan continues to help others understand certain complex safety issues such as chemical hazards, fire safety, and handling of infectious specimens in transit. Furthermore, Dan has authored several safety articles by renowned laboratory publications which includes 2011’s Medical Laboratory Observer (MLO) and 2013’s Medical Lab Management—to mention a few.
